A dog Murphy bed is a fold-down sleeping platform that stores upright against a wall or inside a cabinet, so a dog bed can disappear into a piece of furniture when it is not in use. Closed, most units stick out only about 10 to 14 inches. Open, the platform drops like a drawbridge and needs roughly 35 to 40 inches of clear floor in front of the wall.

That trade is the whole point. A normal dog bed claims floor space all day. A Murphy-style bed claims wall space instead, and often doubles as a side table or shelf. It is not a scaled-down human Murphy bed. Human wall beds use springs or gas pistons to counterbalance a heavy mattress. Dog versions are lighter, so most rely on ordinary hinges, a latch or magnetic catch, and feet or a folding panel that supports the open platform.

When a fold-up dog bed is worth the wall space

It earns its place in apartments, home offices, and guest rooms where a bed on the floor is always in the way, but the dog still sleeps in that room every night. The closed cabinet reads as furniture. The open bed gives the dog a defined spot instead of a cushion shoved into a corner.

It is a weaker fit in three situations.

  • The dog already has a permanent corner and nobody minds the bed staying out. A good orthopedic cushion costs less and has no hinges to fail.
  • The dog is a giant breed. Commercial platforms are built for small through extra-large dogs, not a Great Dane that needs a 48-by-72-inch pad. A Murphy bed sized for that animal becomes a large cabinet.
  • The dog is a chewer or a climber. Hinges, latches, and foam edges are easy targets, and a dog that launches onto the closed unit puts real leverage on the wall anchors.

The space you gain is the closed depth, not the open depth. Measure the wall and the floor in front of it before you buy or build. A unit that is 40 inches wide and 10 inches deep when closed can need nearly 40 inches of clear floor when open, plus room to walk around the extended platform.

How the mechanism actually works

Most dog Murphy beds share the same three parts.

The cabinet is a shallow box, often with a usable top and sometimes open shelves for leashes or toys. The deck is the sleeping platform, hinged along the bottom edge so it folds up into the cabinet. The support is whatever keeps that deck level: handles that become feet, a folding false drawer front, or legs that swing down.

Because the mattress is thin, builders rarely need the piston hardware used on human wall beds. The classic This Old House plan uses toy-box hinges, magnetic catches to hold the deck upright, and a locking pin so it cannot fall open. Commercial cabinets use a similar idea: pull the front down, set the feet, and the cushion is ready.

That simplicity is a benefit and a limit. There is less to adjust and less to break, but nothing counterbalances the platform. If the latch fails, the deck can drop. Keep fingers, tails, and toys clear of the hinge line while it moves.

Wall attachment is not optional. These cabinets are tall and shallow. A dog jumping against the front, or the leverage of the open deck, can tip an unanchored unit. Lori Beds ships its Furphy Bed with drywall anchors and states that the unit must be fastened to the wall; brick, tile, and plaster need different anchors. Screw into studs when you can. Drywall anchors alone are a backup, not the ideal fix for a cabinet a large dog will lean on.

Ready-made beds versus a shop build

Two current product types cover most of what is actually for sale.

Wood cabinet beds. The Furphy Bed from Lori Beds is sold as a bed, side table, and shelf in one. The small closes at 31.5 inches high, 40.5 inches wide, and 10 inches deep, and opens to 39.5 inches deep. The large is the same height and depth, at 52.5 inches wide. Frames are hardwood plywood with real wood veneer, or high-pressure laminate on the white finish. The mattress is a bolstered memory-foam pad with a removable cover, meant to store on end. The company lists a lifetime warranty on manufacturing defects and a 60-day return window, and the unit ships flat for assembly. Street price has been around $449. Confirm the current weight rating with the maker before you buy for a heavier dog. Published descriptions of the small size have put it around 30 pounds, which is a beagle or a small terrier, not a Labrador.

Composite cabinet beds. New Age Pet’s ECOFLEX Murphy-style bed uses a wood-plastic composite that resists moisture and odor better than raw plywood. The extra-large closed size is about 41.7 inches long, 12.5 to 13.7 inches deep, and 37 to 38 inches tall, opening to roughly 38 inches deep. Petco lists a 110-pound weight capacity on this style, with a memory-foam cluster cushion and a zippered cover. The manufacturer offers a 10-year limited warranty on the ECOFLEX parts. Handles double as feet. Retail prices commonly land between about $250 and $450 depending on size and seller.

Older cabinet-style beds in espresso or white, often around 24 inches wide and 34 inches tall, still show up for smaller dogs. Treat those as small-dog furniture unless the listing states a clear weight limit and interior mattress size.

A shop build. The long-running This Old House plan produces a cabinet about 24 inches wide and 36 inches tall, with a deck that holds a pad of roughly 19 by 25 inches. The original materials estimate was about $110 and the build about seven hours for someone comfortable with a circular saw, drill, and basic joinery. Lumber prices have moved since that plan was published, so budget more for plywood, hinges, and finish. The skill rating is easy on the cuts and fussier on the alignment: the deck has to sit flush, the catches have to hold, and the hinge line has to stay square. Woodworkers on forums have scaled the same idea for several dogs using a piano hinge and leftover plywood, which works if the cabinet is anchored and the deck is stiff enough not to sag.

Size the bed to the dog, not the breed label

Diagram: measure the dog from nose to base of tail, then add 6 to 12 inches to size a dog murphy bed

Measure the dog asleep, not standing. Length from nose to the base of the tail, and width across the curled body, then add at least 6 inches each way so the dog can shift. A 25-pound terrier and a 25-pound dachshund do not need the same rectangle.

Match that rectangle to the mattress, not the cabinet exterior. A 40-inch-wide cabinet with thick sides may only give you 36 inches of sleeping surface. If the dog hangs off the end, the bed is too small no matter what the product title says.

Weight rating matters more than breed size charts. A 70-pound dog that flops down hard loads the hinges and the front edge, not just the foam. If the listing does not publish a capacity, ask before you buy. For a DIY bed, use a deck of at least 3/4-inch plywood, a continuous hinge or several heavy toy-box hinges, and a support at the outer edge so the dog’s weight is not hanging on the hinge screws alone.

Ceiling height is rarely the constraint it is for human Murphy beds, because these cabinets are only about 32 to 38 inches tall. Floor clearance and the swing of the deck are the real limits. Do not place one where the open platform blocks a door, a radiator, or the only path through the room.

What fails in real use

The dog ignores it. A new enclosed smell, a raised lip, or a mattress that feels different from the old bed will send some dogs back to the rug. Leave the deck down for several days, put an unwashed blanket from the old bed on the new pad, and feed a few meals beside it before you start folding it away.

The latch is annoying, so the bed stays open. If closing it takes two hands and a pin hunt, the space-saving feature dies in a week. Magnetic catches or a simple pull that one person can operate matter more than decorative hardware.

Foam stays damp. Memory foam stored on end can hold moisture if the cover is not fully dry. Use a waterproof liner under a washable cover, and do not fold the bed up while the cover is wet. Composite frames wipe clean. Plywood needs a finish on every face, including the inside, or urine and saliva will raise the grain.

Tip risk. Anchor to studs. Do not let children climb the closed front. Do not set a heavy lamp on top of a unit that is only anchored with plastic drywall plugs.

Pinch and chew points. The hinge gap closes as the deck rises. A dog that sleeps with a paw over the edge can get it caught if someone folds the bed without looking. Chewers need a tougher cover and, often, a different solution entirely.

A practical way to decide

Buy or build one if the bed has to live in a room you also use, you can anchor the cabinet, and the open deck still leaves a path through the room. Choose a composite cabinet if odor and wipe-down cleaning matter more than a wood finish. Choose a hardwood cabinet if the closed unit has to pass as a side table. Build it if you need a width or height the catalogs do not sell, and you can keep the deck stiff and the cabinet tied to the wall.

Skip it if the dog is heavier than the published rating, the only available wall has no studs you can hit, or you want the bed folded away every time you leave the room and your dog will not settle on a platform that moves. In those homes, a low-profile bed that slides under a console, or a crate with a wood cover that doubles as a bench, solves the same clutter problem with fewer moving parts.

Frequently asked questions

Does a dog Murphy bed use the same hardware as a human Murphy bed? No. Human wall beds need a spring or piston lift sized to a heavy mattress. Dog beds are light enough for continuous hinges or toy-box hinges, plus a latch and feet or a folding support.

Can it stay closed with the dog inside? No. These are open platforms that store flat. They are not crates, and they are not ventilated sleeping cabinets. The dog uses the bed only when the deck is down.

How much floor space does the open bed need? Plan on the open depth in the product specs, commonly 35 to 40 inches from the wall, plus walking room at the foot. The closed depth of 10 to 14 inches is what you live with the rest of the day.

Will a large dog fit a store-bought model? Some extra-large composite cabinets are rated around 110 pounds, which covers many Labs and similar dogs if the mattress length is long enough. Dogs that need a true extra-large human-style pad usually need a custom cabinet. Check both the weight rating and the interior mattress size, not the breed label on the listing.
